Georges Moustaki’s “il y avait un jardin” translated and sung in english: This is a song for children who are born and raised between steel and asphalt, between tarmac and concrete..and who’ll probably never know that the earth was once a garden… There was once a garden that was called the earth Like a forbidden fruit in the sunlight it shone, it was neither paradise nor the nether world, neither anything seen or heard or ever known, la la la la la la. There was once a garden, a house made of trees, with a place to make love on a large moss-grown bed, and a little stream rolling without a crease, refreshing it along while flowing on ahead. There was once a garden a valley wide open, in every season plenty of food to be found, on the burning ground on the grass that was frozen, and stumble upon nameless flowers all around. There was once a garden that was called the earth, it was big enough for children by the thousands, it was inhabited once by our grandfathers who held it themselves from their own grandparents. Where is this garden we could have been born in, where we could have lived naked and with peace of mind, where is this abode full of wide doors opening that i’m still looking for and that I do not find.
